The Elizabethans

Anon. (). The Women Who Changed The World Hall Of Fame. Available: http://www.susyflory.com/books/so-long-status-quo/the-women-who-changed-the-world-hall-of-fame/. Last accessed 28rd Sept 2013.

The Elizabethans did crazy things to achieve the looks they thought we're 'beautiful'.  I am going to list a few facts of how they created their crazy do's.  I love the picture above of Queen Elizabeth I, she looks so innocent and royal - it's beautiful.  Her outfit is so over the top but it fits her image and persona perfectly.

  • The Elizabethans used to pluck the hairs at the front of their hairline to create a high forehead which they considered fashionable.
  • To get the height in their hair, they started off using padding.  They then moved onto using wire frames.  This is similar to nowadays how we used to wet set and use rollers, now technology is advanced and we have heated rollers.
  • Women used to bleach their hair to get it as light as possible.  However, they sometimes bleached it so much it would just fall out.  This then resulted in them wearing wigs.

Elizabethan Quote

"Then followeth the trimming and tricking of their heds in laying out their hair to the show, which of force must be curled, frizled and crisped, laid out on wreathes & borders from one eare to an other. And lest it should fall down, it is underpropped with forks, wyres, & I can not tel what, rather like grim stern monsters, than chaste christian matrones. Then on the edges of their bolstered heir (for it standeth crested round about their frontiers, & hanging over their faces like pendices or vails with glasse windows on every side) there is layd great wreathes of gold and silver, curiously wrought & cunningly applied to the temples of their heads. And for feare of lacking any thing to set foorth their pride withal, at their heyre, thus wreathed and crested, are hanged bugles, ouches, rings, gold, silver, glasses , & such other gewgawes and trinckets besides, which, for that they be innumerable, and I unskilfull in wemens terms, I cannot easily recount."

I recreated this look on paper using-
  • Auburn hair
  • Ribbon
  • Masking tape
  • Satsuma net
Using the hair I, stuck it to the paper following the key words, 'trimmed', 'curly' and 'frizzed'.  I did this by sticking it in all different directions to create a style that looked messy but still neat.

'Monsters' appears in the quote which could symbolise a crazy/scary hairstyle.

'Hanging on face' - I took this to mean she could have a pretty veil coming down near her eye.  I created this using red net from a packet of Satsuma's which I cut into a square shape and stuck down using cellotape.  I placed it at a slight angle to give the illusion it was coming from her hair.

Lastly I used some red ribbon that a weaved through the back of her hair.  I did this because it shows the social status as ribbon was expensive and hard to get hold of.  Also it's one of the few ways women were able to keep their hair in place as hair pins had not been invented.

For our timed assessments I would suggest meeting a few times before hand so we are clear on each others design.  After a few practise sessions I feel that we would be ready to go.

Introduction to Elizabethan Hair Project

Our first project for hair is based on the Elizabethan Era.  We're starting this project by researching Queen Elizabeth I and her lifestyle in this era.  I feel it is very important to do background research in order to fully understand the reasons why lifestyle was lived in a certain way.

I have studied this era before at my last college and it is one of favourites to research because there are so many symbolic references to find that mean many different things.  I also find the way hairstyles and make-up looks were created fascinating and unusual.  I love the colours that were used during this era and how they were portrayed through different status'.

Wild Hairstyle

Wild Hairstyle

Xeon Xai. (2009). Pink Mohawk. Available: http://www.mohawksrock.com/photo/pink-mohawk?xg_source=activity. Last accessed 5th Oct 2013.

I have chosen a huge Mohawk as my wild hairstyle.  I think this hairstyle is cool and funky and the colour really makes it unique. The bright pink is eye catching and crazy and I think this hairstyle is wild because it's something you don't see everyday.

The height of this hairstyle is definitely wild and styling to that perfection would've been time consuming.  I love how neat and tidy the Mohawk itself is and every piece of hair is in place.  I think being wild is also being brave and not caring what people think.  I feel the man that has this hairstyle has a lot of confidence and wears the style well.

I chose a sleek ponytail as my 'smart' hairstyle.  Although this hairstyle could be considered boring and plain, I think it's sleek and stylish.  I feel this hairstyle is smart because the hair is neatly off the face into a tidy ponytail, meaning the wearer wouldn't be able to hide behind their hair.

I think this style would be great for an office job as well as the red carpet.  However, I feel people only with a certain bone structure can pull this off.  The hair has to follow the natural lines of the face to create the ponytail, therefore I think people with an oval shape face could pull this look off.

I also love the piece of hair wrapped around the bobble as it adds something extra to the 'standard ponytail'.
